Quality double glazing already gets you to around 1.2 to 1.4 W/m²K. Triple glazing typically brings that down to around 0.6 to 0.8 W/m²K. That's a real, measurable improvement, but it's a smaller step than the one you already took moving from old or single glazing to double. That's the diminishing-returns economics of this particular upgrade, and it's worth understanding before you pay for it.

For a typical house-sized job, that extra pane usually adds somewhere in the £2,000 to £3,000 range, against maybe £25 to £40 a year in extra energy saving. On the real cost and saving numbers alone, payback from energy savings can run to 50 years or more. We'd rather you knew that upfront than found out after you'd said yes.

Here's our honest steer: it's genuinely worth it if you've got a large north-facing room that never quite warms up, if you're on a genuinely noisy site such as near the A31, the A350 or under the Bournemouth Airport flight path, or if you're doing a full renovation anyway and the cost difference is marginal. It's a weak case if you've got a modern, sheltered south-coast home on a tight budget, where good double glazing will do almost as much for a lot less money. You'll see triple glazing marketed on noise reduction alone, but pane count by itself isn't what determines how much sound a window blocks. Glass thickness, especially using two different thicknesses rather than matched panes, and the cavity design matter more. A well-specified acoustic double-glazed unit can out-perform a standard triple-glazed one for noise, despite having one fewer pane. If quiet is genuinely your priority, tell us that at survey and we'll spec the glass for it, rather than assuming triple glazing is automatically the answer.

Highly efficient glass changes condensation risk in both directions. A warmer inner pane means less risk of condensation forming inside the room. But the same coating that keeps heat in also keeps the outer pane cooler, so on a still, cold night you might see condensation on the OUTSIDE of the glass. That's a genuine, reassuring sign the window is doing its job well, not a fault, and it usually clears once the sun's on the glass.

There's no reliable evidence that a triple-glazed unit has a longer life expectancy than a double-glazed one. Both rely on the same sealed-unit technology, and both typically carry a manufacturer guarantee somewhere in the 10 to 25 year range. We won't tell you triple glazing lasts longer just because it sounds like it should.
