What actually drives the price
No local competitor we've seen puts all of this in one place, so quotes often look like they're pulled from thin air.
Material
uPVC, aluminium or timber-look. The largest single driver, before anything else is chosen, and it sets the whole price band for the job.
Size and configuration
The same window rises in price with size, before style, bay or tilt-and-turn configurations are even considered.
Glazing spec
Double glazing is standard. Triple glazing, or a security upgrade to the glass, costs more on top of the base spec.
Colour and finish
A dual-sided colour choice, one colour outside and another inside, can push the lead time out on some ranges, not just the price.
Access
Scaffolding or a tricky access, an upstairs window over a flat-roofed extension for example, raises the installed price.
Disposal
Some glass, like leaded or stained glass, needs special disposal, which adds to the job.
Frame or unit only
A full frame replacement and a sealed-unit-only repair are very different jobs, at very different prices, so it pays to be clear which one you actually need.
Comparing quotes fairly
How to read a quote so you're comparing like with like
A supply-only quote and a fully fitted one can look completely different for the same window, typically £100 to £400 apart. A headline figure that doesn't say which one it means is the single easiest way a quote looks cheaper than it turns out to be, and it's the one thing none of the local 'prices' pages we've seen bother explaining. Ask straight out which one you're being quoted, before you compare it to anything else.
- "From £X" on its own usually leaves out VAT, disposal and access. Ask what it actually includes
- Difficult access, damaged frames or sills, special glass disposal and listed-building permits can all push a quote above the headline figure
- Check the guarantee terms too. Workmanship and materials are usually covered separately, ours is a 10-year Assure-backed workmanship guarantee, on top of whatever the manufacturer covers

Is it worth doing now, and is there help available?
Building Regs set a ceiling of 1.4 W/m²K for a replacement window today. Glazing fitted 20 to 25 years ago is very unlikely to get close to that, so it's working a lot harder to keep the heat in than a modern window would, and it usually shows up as cold spots, draughts round the frame or condensation on cold mornings. - Government grants for double glazing do exist, but most are limited or means-tested rather than open to everyone. Worth checking what you'd actually qualify for before assuming one applies
- An old window isn't automatically worth replacing on its own. If it's just a failed seal or a stiff hinge, that's usually a repair, not a full replacement

A small job well done. I used Wilshaw Glazing to install a new double glazed window in my kitchen - a relatively small job. They were highly efficient - providing a quote in advance and making sure I was happy with the proposed window confirmation. The window took 3 weeks to manufacture, and was installed as soon as it was ready. Usually, yes. Building Regs set a ceiling of 1.4 W/m²K for a replacement window today, and glazing that age is very unlikely to get close, so it's working harder than it needs to, and it usually shows in a higher heating bill.
Is there a government grant for double glazing?
Sometimes, but most schemes are limited or means-tested rather than open to everyone, so don't assume you'll qualify. Worth checking what's currently available before you factor it into your budget.
How much do window fitters charge to fit a window?
It's usually built into the fitted price rather than charged separately, and it's the gap between a supply-only quote and a fully fitted one, typically £100 to £400 per window, depending on access and how much making good is needed. What should I check in a quote so I'm comparing like with like?
Whether it's supply-only or fully fitted, whether VAT, disposal and access are included, and what the guarantee actually covers, workmanship and materials are usually two separate things.
